Digital Door Lock Malaysia: The 2026 Buyer’s Guide

Searching for a digital door lock in Malaysia quickly turns into a wall of specs: palm vein, face ID, 6068 mortise, WiFi, Bluetooth, “fully auto”. Most of it matters less than three questions: what door is it going on, who needs to get in, and what happens when something goes wrong. This guide walks through each decision in the order an installer would, so you buy once and buy right.

Step 1: Start with your door, not the lock

Malaysian homes typically have three kinds of entrance, and each needs a different lock design:

  • Main door (wooden, fire-rated or metal security door). Takes a mortise lock fitted inside the door. Look at our Door Lever, Push Pull and Signature series. These suit doors roughly 40–120 mm thick.
  • Grille door. Exposed to rain and sun, often with a narrow frame. You need a lock built for grilles, either a mortise type (typically for grilles 25–100 mm) or a rim lock mounted on the frame. See the Grille Door Series and our dedicated grille door lock guide.
  • Frame or mesh door (common in landed homes and some condos). Needs a slim lock designed for frame doors, such as the Frame Door Series.

If you are unsure, measure first. Our door measuring guide shows exactly what to check, or send a photo and we will confirm the right model.

Step 2: Choose the unlocking methods your household will actually use

Every Avant Guard lock combines several ways in. More methods is not automatically better; pick for your family:

  • Fingerprint: the everyday default. Most of our locks store up to 100 fingerprints.
  • Password (PIN): useful for guests, cleaners and contractors. Look for a virtual password feature, which lets you type random digits before and after your real code so nobody can read it off your fingers.
  • Card / NFC: good for elderly parents and children who struggle with fingerprints.
  • Face ID and palm vein: hands-free and very hard to fake, because palm vein reads the blood vessel pattern under the skin. Available on higher-end models such as the S50, P41 and G22.
  • Mechanical key: the last-resort backup. Most models include one; check before you buy if this matters to you.
  • App and temporary passwords: let you issue a time-limited code to a visitor from your phone.

Step 3: Semi-auto or fully auto?

Semi-auto locks need you to lift the handle to throw the deadbolt. They are simple, reliable and run on AA batteries for months. Fully auto locks throw the bolt by motor as soon as the door closes, so you can never forget to lock up. Fully auto models usually use a rechargeable lithium battery (charged with a USB-C cable) because the motor draws more power.

Step 4: WiFi, Bluetooth or both?

This is where many buyers get caught out. A WiFi lock connects to your router, so you can unlock or check the door from anywhere. The trade-off is that it depends on your internet and on the manufacturer’s cloud. A Bluetooth lock works directly with your phone or with a local hub, keeps working when the internet is down and is usually gentler on batteries.

Avant Guard’s newer BLE models (such as the D1 BLE and S11 BLE) run on LOCAMESH™, our offline Bluetooth mesh. Locks, lights and curtains talk to each other locally, with no hub, no cloud dependency and no single point of failure. Read why that matters in smart home without WiFi.

Step 5: Battery and emergency power

Ask how long the battery lasts and how you get in if it dies. Typical figures for our range:

  • 4 × AA models: about 6–9 months.
  • Lithium rechargeable models, including the S50: about 6–9 months.
  • Every lock warns you well before the battery runs out, and has an emergency USB port so a power bank can wake it up.

Full details are in what happens when a digital lock battery dies.

Step 6: Security features worth paying for

Look for an anti-pry (tamper) alarm, a hijack (duress) alarm that silently alerts family if you are forced to open the door, lock-out after repeated wrong attempts, a 304 stainless steel mortise and a rated lock cylinder (C-grade is the higher grade). We explain each in are digital locks safe?

Step 7: Installation and warranty

A good lock badly installed is a bad lock. Ask whether the price includes installation, whether the installer will check the door gap and alignment, and how long the warranty is. Avant Guard lock prices include installation (we confirm coverage for your area on WhatsApp) and every product carries a 2-year warranty you can register online.

How much should you pay?

Installed prices for our current range run from RM899 for the D1 BLE to around RM2,599 for the S50 with palm vein and face recognition. Grille locks start from RM1,499 (G12). Our digital lock price guide breaks down what you get at each level.

Quick checklist before you buy

  2. Unlocking methods chosen for every family member.
  3. Semi-auto or fully auto decided.
  4. WiFi or Bluetooth decided (and what happens when the internet is down).

  6. Installation, warranty and after-sales support confirmed in writing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best digital door lock in Malaysia?

There is no single best lock. The right one depends on your door type, who uses it and whether you want it fully automatic. For a typical condo main door, a semi-auto fingerprint lock like the Avant Guard S11 BLE is a reliable choice; for maximum convenience and security, a fully automatic palm vein and face ID lock like the S50.

Does a digital door lock need WiFi?

No. Many locks, including Avant Guard BLE models on LOCAMESH™, work fully offline. WiFi only adds remote access over the internet.

How long does a digital lock battery last?

Usually 6 to 9 months on AA batteries or a rechargeable lithium pack. That includes the flagship S50. The lock warns you early when the battery is low.

Is installation included in the price?

For Avant Guard smart locks, yes. Prices include installation; WhatsApp us your area to confirm coverage.
