Smart Home Without WiFi: Why Offline Bluetooth Mesh Is More Reliable
Every smart home owner eventually has the same bad evening: the internet drops, or the app’s server is down, and suddenly the lights will not respond and the curtains will not close. It does not have to work that way. How your devices talk to each other matters more than which app you use. Here is a plain-English comparison of the three main options, and why we built Avant Guard on an offline Bluetooth mesh.
Option 1: WiFi devices
Each device connects directly to your home router, and usually to the manufacturer’s cloud.
- Pros: no extra hardware; easy remote control from anywhere; good for high-bandwidth devices like cameras.
- Cons: when the internet or the cloud is down, many WiFi devices lose app and automation control. Dozens of devices can crowd a home router. WiFi radios also use more power, which is why battery devices on WiFi need charging more often.
Option 2: Zigbee devices
Low-power devices form a mesh, but everything goes through a central hub (gateway).
- Pros: low power; mature ecosystem; local control is possible through the hub.
- Cons: the hub is a single point of failure. If it loses power, crashes or needs replacing, the whole system stops. You also need the hub before anything works.
Option 3: Bluetooth mesh (how LOCAMESH™ works)
In a Bluetooth mesh, every mains-powered device, such as a light or a switch, also acts as a relay. Messages hop from device to device across the home, and each device stores its own settings and scenes.
- No hub needed for local control. Your phone, wall switch or scene controller talks straight to the mesh.
- Works with no internet. Scenes, switches and schedules run locally.
- No single point of failure. If one light is switched off at the wall, messages simply route through the others.
- Low power, which is why our Bluetooth locks get long battery life.
LOCAMESH™ is Avant Guard’s offline Bluetooth mesh. Our lighting, switches, controllers, curtains, speakers and BLE locks join the same mesh, so a single scene can dim the lights and close the curtains, all without leaving your home network or touching the cloud.
Side-by-side
| WiFi | Zigbee | Bluetooth mesh (LOCAMESH™) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Works during an internet outage | Often limited | Yes, via hub | Yes |
| Hub required | No | Yes | No |
| Single point of failure | Router / cloud | Hub | None |
| Power use | Higher | Low | Low |
| Remote control away from home | Built in | Via hub | Add a small gateway |
So when do you still need a gateway?
Only for things that, by definition, need the internet: controlling your home while you are away, and voice assistants like Google Assistant, Alexa or Siri. For that, a small plug-in Bluetooth gateway (from RM79) bridges the mesh to the internet. The important difference: if the gateway or internet goes down, only remote access pauses. Everything inside the house keeps working.
What about cameras?
Cameras stream video, which needs WiFi bandwidth. That is fine: cameras on WiFi and everything else on the mesh is the best of both. Your lights and locks do not depend on your camera’s connection.
Who benefits most from an offline mesh
- Condos with patchy WiFi in bedrooms and corridors, because the mesh extends itself through every light.
- Homestays and rentals, where guests change the WiFi password or unplug the router.
- Hotels, offices and elderly care, where downtime is not acceptable. See our solutions.
- Anyone tired of apps: wall switches and scene controllers work instantly, with no phone needed.

Frequently asked questions
Can a smart home work without internet?
Yes, if it uses local control. Avant Guard devices run on LOCAMESH™, an offline Bluetooth mesh, so lights, switches, curtains and BLE locks keep working without internet. You only need internet for remote access and voice assistants.
Do I need a hub for Bluetooth mesh?
Not for local control. Devices relay messages to each other. A small gateway is only needed if you want to control your home while away or use voice assistants.
Is Bluetooth mesh better than Zigbee?
Both are low-power meshes. Zigbee relies on a central hub, which becomes a single point of failure. Bluetooth mesh like LOCAMESH™ needs no hub for local control, so there is no single device that can bring the system down.
What is LOCAMESH™?
LOCAMESH™ is Avant Guard’s offline Bluetooth mesh system. It connects Avant Guard lighting, switches, curtains, speakers and Bluetooth locks locally, with no hub, no cloud dependency and no single point of failure.
