Grille Door Digital Lock: How to Choose One That Lasts in Malaysia
The grille is the first door a burglar meets and the first thing the weather hits. That makes the grille lock the hardest smart lock to get right. A lock that works perfectly on an indoor wooden door can fail within months on a grille that faces afternoon sun and monsoon rain. Here is how to choose one that lasts.
Mortise or rim lock? Check your grille first
Grille locks come in two designs, and your grille decides which one fits:
- Mortise grille locks sit inside the grille’s lock box, with a panel on each side. They look neat and suit most residential grilles with a proper lock case. Our G12 (semi-auto) and G22 V2 (fully auto) are mortise types for grille sections about 25–100 mm deep.
- Rim (surface) grille locks mount onto the grille frame and bolt into a keeper. They are the answer when the grille has no lock case or the frame is too thin to cut. The G45 and G40 are rim types for frames about 25–50 mm.
If you do not know which you have, take a photo of both sides of the grille lock area and the edge of the door. Our grille door measurement guide shows exactly what to capture.
Front-only or both sides?
On a grille, the inside panel is reachable through the bars. Some locks therefore keep the smart features on the outside panel only. On the G45, for example, palm vein, face ID, PIN and card entry are on the outside panel only. It is a security choice, not a cost cut: nobody can reach through the grille and use a keypad on the inside.
Weather: splash-proof is not the same as rain-proof
Be wary of any grille lock sold as “waterproof” with no detail. Most grille locks, including ours, are splash-proof: they handle rain blown onto the grille and wet hands, but they are not designed to sit under a direct downpour every afternoon. Practical rules:
- If your grille is under a porch or awning, any splash-proof grille lock is fine.
- If it faces open sky, plan a small canopy, or choose a lock rated for outdoor gates. Our G32 is rain-proof and built for exposed outdoor gates.
Semi-auto vs fully auto on a grille
Semi-auto grille locks (G12) need you to lift the handle to lock. They use less power, so they run on a small rechargeable battery for months. Fully auto locks (G22 V2, G45, G40) lock themselves when the grille closes, which matters on a grille you go in and out of many times a day. They need a bigger battery: the G45 has a 4,200 mAh pack and the G22 V2 a 3,200 mAh pack.
Unlocking methods that suit a grille
- Fingerprint works on every model, but wet fingers after rain can slow it down.
- Palm vein and face ID (G22 V2, G45) are hands-free and unaffected by wet fingertips.
- RF remote (G45, G40) lets you open the grille from the car or from inside the house.
- Mechanical key: the G12 has keyholes on both sides, useful if the battery ever runs flat.
Match the grille lock with your main door
Most homes need two locks: grille and main door. Buying them together means one app, one installer visit and matching finishes.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install a digital lock on any grille door?
Most grilles can take either a mortise or a rim-mounted digital lock. Grilles with a lock case suit mortise locks such as the G12 or G22 V2; thin frames without a lock case suit rim locks such as the G45. Send us a photo to confirm.
Will a grille digital lock get damaged by rain?
Splash-proof grille locks handle rain blown onto the grille, but they are not designed for constant direct downpour. Fit a small canopy on fully exposed grilles, or use a rain-proof outdoor gate lock like the G32.
Why is the inside of some grille locks not smart?
Because the inside can be reached through the grille bars. Keeping the keypad and biometrics on the outside only stops anyone reaching through to operate the lock.
How much is a grille door digital lock in Malaysia?
Avant Guard grille locks cost RM1,199 to RM1,999 installed. A smart padlock for side gates is RM259.
