Magnetic Track Lights: A Complete Guide for Malaysian Homes

Avant Guard magnetic track lights on a living room ceiling

Magnetic track lights have gone from hotel lobbies to Malaysian condos in just a few years, and for good reason: one slim track in the ceiling, and you can clip on spotlights, grille lights, flood lights or even a speaker, then move them whenever you rearrange the room. Here is everything you need to know before you plan one.

How magnetic track lighting works

A low-voltage (48V DC) aluminium track runs along the ceiling. A power supply hidden in the ceiling converts household power to 48V. Light heads have magnets on top; they snap onto the track anywhere along its length and draw power through the contacts. No tools, no rewiring to move a light.

Recessed vs surface-mounted track

  • Recessed tracks sit flush inside a plaster ceiling for the cleanest look. They need to be planned before the ceiling is closed up, ideally during renovation.
  • Surface-mounted tracks are fixed onto the ceiling surface. Ideal when the ceiling is already finished or you are renting.

Our ultra-slim magnetic track is designed to keep the line on the ceiling as thin as possible, in black or white, in 1 m, 2 m and 3 m lengths. Straight, L, T, cross and corner joints let you run it around a room or across a ceiling grid.

Choosing light heads

Light head What it does Where to use it
Spotlight Focused beam you can angle Artwork, feature walls, dining table
Anti-glare spotlight Deep-set light source, no harsh glare Living room seating, bedrooms
Grille light Row of small lights, soft even wash Corridors, kitchens, over islands
Foldable grille light Grille light that tilts Wall washing, shelves
Flood light Wide, even general lighting Main ambient light for a room

A typical living room uses flood or grille lights for ambient light and two to four spotlights for accents. Browse the ultra-slim magnetic track lights.

Sizing the power supply

Add up the wattage of every light head on a track, then choose a power supply with at least 20% headroom. For example, six 10W spotlights (60W) fit comfortably on a 100W supply; a long run with grille and flood lights may need a 200W supply. Power supplies typically come in 100W and 200W sizes.

Making it smart

Avant Guard magnetic track lights are smart out of the box. Each light head runs on LOCAMESH™, our offline Bluetooth mesh, so you can:

  • Dim each light from 10% to 100%
  • Tune colour temperature from warm 2700K to cool daylight
  • Create scenes like Dinner, Movie or Reading, triggered from a wall switch, a wireless controller or your phone
  • Keep it all working without internet or a hub

Add sound on the same track

Magnetic Bluetooth speakers clip onto the same track as your lights, so you get ceiling audio without running speaker cables. See magnetic speakers.

What does it cost?

Smart magnetic light heads in our range cost from RM119 each (ultra-slim spotlights, grille, flood and anti-glare heads are all RM119; larger standard magnetic heads go up to RM169). The track and power supply depend on your ceiling layout, so we quote them together with installation as part of a lighting plan. See the bigger picture in smart home cost in Malaysia.

Planning tips

  1. Plan during renovation if you want recessed tracks; tell your ID or contractor early.
  2. Leave access to the power supply through a ceiling access panel or a reachable cove.
  3. Run tracks parallel to walls about 60–90 cm away for good wall washing.
  4. Do not overload one track; split long runs across two power supplies.
  5. Pick one colour (black or white) for tracks and heads throughout for a clean look.
